BIO / CV

Anica Shpilberg is a Peruvian born Miami based artist.  Anica started creating art at a very early age in her native Peru after her mother introduced her to handicrafts such as embroidery, knitting and sewing. However, when Anica started spending hours drawing in her notebooks her mother enrolled her in painting classes. In 1970, she emigrated to the United States, where she studied design, printmaking, at the Pratt Institute, mixed media and steel sculpture hat the Silvermine School of Art in Connecticut.  And later Photography at ICP in New York.

Her work is a combination of Expressionism, Constructivism and reflects the influence of some of the key figures of the 20th century, including Robert Rauschenberg, Frank Stella and Clifford Still. But her work is not simple to interpret, nor should it be taken literally. Instead, it must be discovered step by step by learning to read the myriad symbols in her paintings that she hides under layers of pigments and materials that metaphorically function like the strata of remembrances, which must be removed in order to uncover the intimate universe of each human being.

She utilizes her photographs in a variety of ways either printed on canvas worked with Mixed Media like on her series “The Business of Art" they are pictures taken in fairs, museum and galleries as well as in her series “Layers of Meaning” , delving into her extensive archive and selects images from her trips, altering the original scene and imprinting them with an aura of timelessness.

Anica ‘s later photographs render peculiar corners of reality. The artist discloses visions and happenings of urban life. From the up-close intimacy of people, to panoramic city visions, to surreal objects, her work captures fragmented narratives of a larger story in which the photographer’s eye gives away the specifics of a situation. Anica captures humans in frozen moments, some of them in active connections, others in an introspective isolation.  Anica aims to capture the heartbeat of each event she records by stressing and reassessing its singularity. In this way she attempts to hold back time and perpetuate it for posterity.

Her digital photographs of the mannequins are prosthetic and iconic references for femininity. In their suggestive sensual poses and moody expressions, they act as clones in the threshold of humanity. Fashion models and nudes create a synergic representation of the world of women, she presents them gathering in a surreal scene, as lively ghosts of a simulated world.  In their outermost inner intensity, these clones show seductive and sensual poses, introspective faces, sad expressions and exalted emotions as mimesis of the feminine cosmos. They stage an inverted realism in which the viewer is confronted by an ambiguous realm of perception. Is it a dummy? Is it a model? Is it human? The series is call “The Clones” and later with the help of digital intervention they are transformed into the “Avataraty Series”

Presently Anica is part of “Studio 58” in Miami where she has a studio and gallery. She Spent 12 years as a resident artist in The Bakehouse Art Complex.

Anica has exhibited extensively thru the US and around the world. Her work is in many private collections
